Skylight membrane lighting: what to plan before installation.
In short: a skylight membrane light puts LED lighting behind a translucent membrane in a ceiling or recess, so the whole surface glows evenly. How good it looks depends on decisions made before the ceiling is closed: how deep the recess is, how the LEDs are spaced, where the power supply sits, and how it is controlled.
Recess depth and LED spacing
Light needs distance to blend. A shallow recess with widely spaced LEDs shows bright lines or dots through the membrane. More depth, closer spacing, or both, give a smoother glow. Agree the depth with your carpenter or ceiling contractor first, because the electrician works inside the space they leave.
Power supply and access
The LED drivers (power supplies) are the part most likely to need servicing. Put them where they can be reached through an access panel, not sealed in the ceiling. Keep wiring runs short and labelled so any fault can be found quickly.
Brightness and colour
Decide early whether the light should dim, and whether the colour should be warm or cool. Dimming and colour control need compatible drivers and controllers, and they can be linked to smart control if you want scenes.
Test before the ceiling closes
Every light and control should be tested with the membrane off and then with it on, before the ceiling is finished. Fixing a dead strip afterwards means opening the ceiling again.
What it costs
Skylight membrane lighting is quoted on request because the price depends on the panel size, the LED type, the power supply and the control you choose. Our page on skylight membrane lighting explains what we install. Send photos or plans for an itemised written quote.
