What Is a DB Box, and When Does Yours Need Replacing?

What it actually is

The DB box is the grey or white panel usually mounted above your main door, in a service riser, or in a corner of the kitchen. DB stands for distribution board. Some people call it the fuse box, the circuit breaker box or the electrical panel. They all mean the same thing.

Its job is to take the single incoming supply from SP Group and split it into the separate circuits that run around your home, while protecting each one. Everything electrical in your flat passes through this box. It is the most important safety component in your home and the one almost nobody looks at.

What you are looking at when you open it

Open the cover, do not touch anything, and you will see a few distinct things.

The main switch. Usually the largest one, often at one end. This isolates the entire flat. If you ever need to kill all power in an emergency, this is it. Worth knowing where it is before you need it in the dark.

The RCCB. A larger switch than the small ones, with a small test button on its face, often marked T or TEST. This is your life safety device. It monitors current going out on the live and coming back on the neutral. If those two do not match, current is escaping somewhere, possibly through a person, and it cuts the supply within about 30 milliseconds. Many flats have one covering everything. Better arrangements split the flat across two so a single fault does not black out the whole home.

The MCBs. The row of small switches. One per circuit. Each is rated to match the cable it protects, commonly 6A or 10A for lighting, 16A or 20A for socket circuits, and higher for a water heater or aircon. If a circuit draws more current than it should, the MCB opens.

The labelling. In a well maintained board, each switch has a label saying what it controls. In most Singapore flats, the labels are either missing, faded, or wrong because someone did work later and never updated them.

Why old boards are a real problem

There are four things that make a board worth replacing rather than repairing.

No RCCB at all. Some older flats, particularly those never renovated since the 1980s, have overcurrent protection but no earth leakage protection. That means the board will protect the cable from overheating but will not protect a person from electrocution. This is the single strongest reason to upgrade a board, and it is not a small difference in safety.

Rewireable fuses instead of breakers. If your board has ceramic carriers that you pull out and rewire with fuse wire, it is decades old. These work, but they are slower to operate than a modern breaker, and there is nothing stopping someone from rewiring one with the wrong gauge wire, which quietly removes the protection.

Not enough ways. Older boards were built for a home with far fewer circuits. As people add water heaters, instantaneous heaters, aircon units, induction hobs and kitchen appliances, circuits get combined onto shared breakers or spare ways run out entirely. A board that has no room for another circuit will block any future work you want to do.

Heat damage. Browning around a terminal, a smell of hot plastic, or discoloured plastic anywhere in the box. That is a sign of a connection that has been running hot, and it does not resolve itself.

Signs your board needs attention

Frequent nuisance tripping with no traceable cause. An RCCB that will not stay reset. A board that feels warm to the touch. Any buzzing or crackling. Visible rust, corrosion or water staining. Circuits sharing breakers because there is no spare capacity. An RCCB that does not trip when you press its test button.

That last one deserves emphasis. Press the test button on your RCCB. It should trip immediately and cut power. If it does not, the device that is supposed to save someone's life is not working, and you would have no way of knowing without pressing the button. Manufacturers generally recommend testing it every few months. Almost nobody does.

What a replacement involves

A DB box replacement is not a like for like swap of a box. Done properly, it involves isolating the supply, which means the flat is without power for the duration. Identifying and testing every existing circuit, because in most older flats nobody actually knows what runs where. Fitting the new enclosure, main switch, RCCBs and MCBs, with the breaker rating matched correctly to each circuit's cable size. Checking the earthing arrangement, which in older flats is sometimes the real problem and is often the part that turns a straightforward job into a longer one. Testing insulation resistance, earth continuity and RCCB trip times, then labelling every way accurately, and issuing the completion documentation.

Realistically half a day for a straightforward flat, longer where cable condition is poor or the earthing needs correcting.

What it costs

A minor repair, such as reterminating a loose connection or replacing one burnt breaker, generally runs S$100 to S$250.

A full board replacement with modern RCCB and MCB protection typically starts around S$350 and commonly lands between S$450 and S$800 for an HDB flat. Condos and landed homes run higher because there are usually more circuits.

Costs go up when the existing earthing needs correction, when the circuits are unlabelled and have to be traced individually, when the existing cabling is in poor condition, or when the board needs to be relocated. Anyone quoting a firm price for a board replacement without seeing the existing board is guessing.

The one upgrade worth doing at the same time

While the board is open and the power is off, adding circuits is dramatically cheaper than doing it later. The expensive part of adding a dedicated circuit is not the breaker, it is the access, the isolation and the return visit.

If you know you want a dedicated water heater circuit, an aircon isolator, or a separate kitchen circuit for the induction hob, doing it during a board replacement can save several hundred dollars against doing it as three separate jobs.

What to ask a contractor

Ask how many ways the new board will have and how many will be spare. Spare ways are cheap now and expensive later. Ask how the flat will be split across RCCBs. A single RCCB covering everything means one fault in the bathroom takes out your fridge. Ask whether the earthing will be tested and what happens if it needs work. Ask what testing will be done and whether you will receive the results and the certification. Ask for the board to be labelled accurately when finished.

Getting help
