Why Does My Power Keep Tripping? A Step-by-Step Guide for HDB Homeowners

First, the good news
Your power tripping is usually your electrical system working correctly, not failing. Something in your home drew current it should not have, or leaked current to earth, and a safety device cut the supply in a fraction of a second. That device just did its job.
The bad news is that the trip tells you something is wrong without telling you what. This guide walks you through finding out, safely, before you call anyone.
The two kinds of trip, and why the difference matters
Open your DB box and look at the switches. You will see a row of small switches, and usually one or two larger ones.
The small ones are MCBs, or miniature circuit breakers. Each one protects a single circuit, such as your kitchen sockets or your bedroom lights. When one MCB trips and everything else stays on, the problem is confined to that one circuit. This is usually an overload, meaning too many appliances drawing power at once, or a short circuit in one appliance or one part of the wiring.
The larger one is the RCCB, sometimes called the ELCB in older flats. This one watches for current leaking to earth, which is the fault type that electrocutes people. When the RCCB trips, your whole flat usually goes dark at once. This is the more serious of the two, because earth leakage often means water has reached something it should not have, or insulation has broken down.
So the first question to answer is simple. Did one small switch trip, or did everything go off? That single observation narrows the problem enormously, and it is the first thing any electrician will ask you.
The half split test: finding the culprit yourself
This works for both kinds of trip, and it takes about fifteen minutes. You do not need any tools.
Step one. Unplug everything. Genuinely everything on the affected circuit or, if the whole flat tripped, everything in the flat. Kettle, washing machine, water heater, aircon, phone chargers, that old fan in the store room. Anything with a plug comes out of the wall.
Step two. Reset the tripped switch. Push it fully down first, then firmly up. Sometimes a breaker sits in a middle position that looks reset but is not.
Step three. If it holds, the fault is in one of your appliances rather than in the fixed wiring. Now plug things back in one at a time, waiting about thirty seconds after each. The appliance that trips it is your culprit. Leave it unplugged and get it serviced or replaced.
Step four. If it will not reset even with everything unplugged, the fault is in the fixed wiring, in a hardwired appliance like your water heater or aircon, or in the DB box itself. Stop here and call a professional. There is nothing further you can safely test yourself.
Write down what you find. If you tell an electrician "it trips only when I switch on the water heater, and only after a shower," you have just saved him an hour of diagnosis and yourself the cost of that hour.
The usual suspects in Singapore homes
Water heaters. By a wide margin the most common cause of whole flat trips here. The heating element sits in a wet environment for years and eventually the insulation degrades, letting current leak to earth. Classic sign: it trips when the heater is on, more often when the bathroom is humid, and sometimes only after long use. A leaking element does not get better on its own.
Kettles, irons and rice cookers. High wattage appliances with heating elements fail the same way, just less often.
Overloaded kitchen circuits. Many older flats were wired before anyone owned an air fryer, an induction cooker and a microwave at the same time. Running three of them together can exceed what the circuit was designed for. If your kitchen MCB trips only when you are cooking properly, this is likely it, and the fix is a new dedicated circuit rather than a repair.
Aircon units. Especially older ones, and especially after a period of heavy rain if the outdoor unit is exposed.
Water ingress from above. If your neighbour upstairs had a leak, or if there has been heavy rain and your ceiling has damp patches, water in a ceiling light fitting or a conduit will trip the RCCB. This one often appears out of nowhere with no appliance change.
Insects and lizards in the DB box. Rare, but it happens in Singapore. A lizard bridging two terminals will cause a very confusing intermittent fault.
A failing RCCB. These devices have a lifespan. An RCCB that is twenty years old and trips at random with no traceable cause may simply be worn out and oversensitive. Replacement is inexpensive relative to the aggravation.
When to stop testing and call someone
Stop and call immediately, before touching anything else, if any of these apply.
There is a burning smell, or you can see scorch marks, browning or melted plastic around a socket or in the DB box. Burning smell means heat, and heat means something is arcing. This is a fire risk today, not eventually.
The breaker trips again immediately every time you reset it, with everything unplugged.
You get a tingle or a shock from an appliance body, a tap or a metal fixture. That is current on a surface that should be at earth potential and it can kill someone.
There is visible water in or near the DB box. The trip started right after any water leak, ceiling seepage or flooding.
In all of these cases, leave the affected breaker off. A dark bedroom is an inconvenience. A live fault you have reset five times is something else.
What not to do
Do not keep resetting a breaker that keeps tripping. Each reset re energises the fault. If the fault is an arc, you are repeatedly re striking it.
Never replace an MCB with a higher rated one to stop the tripping. This is the single most dangerous piece of DIY advice circulating. The MCB is rated to match the cable behind it. Fitting a bigger one does not fix the overload, it simply removes the protection and allows the cable inside your wall to overheat instead.
Never bypass a breaker with wire. People do this. It is illegal, it will void your insurance, and it removes the thing standing between an electrical fault and a house fire.
Do not open up sockets or light fittings to investigate. Under the Electricity Act, work on your fixed installation must be done by a Licensed Electrical Worker. Beyond the legal question, the wiring behind a socket may be live even when the switch is off, depending on how the circuit was wired.
What a proper diagnosis involves
When an electrician attends a tripping fault, the work is mostly measurement rather than guesswork. Insulation resistance testing on each circuit to find where current is leaking to earth. Checking the earth continuity. Load measurement on the suspect circuit. Visual inspection of terminals for heat damage and loose connections.
That is why fault tracing is usually quoted separately from the repair. Nobody can honestly price a fix before knowing what is broken. What you should expect is a clear diagnostic fee, an explanation of what was found, and a separate quoted price for the repair, which you then approve before work begins.
Be a little wary of anyone who arrives, glances at the box and immediately recommends a full DB replacement without testing. Sometimes a full replacement genuinely is the right answer. It should follow from a test result, not precede one.
Getting help
