How Many Power Points Do You Actually Need? A Room-by-Room Guide

The most common renovation regret
Ask people who renovated three years ago what they would change. A surprising number say the same thing: not enough power points, and the ones they have are in the wrong places.
It is an easy mistake because power points are the least interesting decision in a renovation. Nobody feels strongly about a socket. Then you live there and discover the bedside socket is behind the headboard, the kitchen has three sockets for eight appliances, and there is nowhere to plug in a vacuum in the corridor.
Adding a point during first fix is inexpensive. Adding one afterwards means surface trunking or hacking, patching and repainting, at several times the cost. This is the definition of a decision worth spending an extra hour on.
Living room
Behind the TV: minimum four, ideally six. Television, set top box, soundbar or console, streaming device, router if it lives there. People consistently underestimate this one and end up with a visible extension cord under a wall mounted TV, which defeats the point of wall mounting it.
Each end of the sofa: two each. Lamps, phone charging, laptop. This is where you actually sit, and it is the most used socket position in the room.
A console or sideboard position: two. For lamps, diffusers, decorative lighting.
At least one on each remaining wall. Furniture moves. Layouts change. A socket on an empty wall costs very little now.
Consider USB integrated sockets at the sofa and bedside. They date faster than standard sockets, so use them alongside normal points rather than instead of them.
Kitchen
The heaviest requirement in the home and the one where poor planning is felt daily.
Along the countertop: at least four twin points, distributed rather than clustered. Kettle, air fryer, microwave, rice cooker, coffee machine, blender, toaster. Count your actual appliances and add two.
One for each built in appliance, positioned to be accessible for isolation but not directly behind the appliance where you can never reach it. Oven, hob, hood, dishwasher, fridge.
Consider a second kitchen circuit. This is the fix for the trip that only ever happens while cooking a real meal. Splitting the kitchen across two circuits is far cheaper at first fix than after.
Dedicated circuits where required. Induction hobs and built in ovens usually need their own. Confirm the exact model before wiring, because requirements vary meaningfully between them.
Think about where you actually stand. A socket behind a fixed appliance or at the back of a deep counter is technically installed and practically unusable.
Bedrooms
Two on each side of the bed, and this is the one to get positionally right. Measure your bed and your bedside table before finalising, because the classic failure is a socket that ends up behind the headboard.
Aircon: own supply and an accessible isolator. Not behind a fitted wardrobe.
Desk or study position: four. Laptop, monitor, lamp, charging. If anyone works from home, make it six.
One near the door for a vacuum or a fan. A wardrobe socket if you want internal lighting later. Cheap now, awkward later.
Bathrooms
Different rules apply because of the water. Sockets are generally not permitted inside bathrooms in Singapore homes. What you should be planning for instead:
Water heater: dedicated circuit with an isolating switch located outside the bathroom, or a pull cord type inside it.
Mirror lighting or a demister: requires a fused connection rather than a socket, planned at first fix.
A socket just outside the bathroom door for a hairdryer. Obvious in hindsight, frequently missed.
Service yard, corridors and circulation
Washing machine and dryer: own points, and a dedicated circuit if you have a combined washer dryer or a separate dryer with a heating element.
One socket per corridor stretch. Vacuum cleaners, robot vacuum docks, dehumidifiers, night lights. This is the cheapest socket in the house to install and one of the most used. A dedicated position for a robot vacuum dock, low, out of the traffic path, and permanently powered, is worth planning for if you have one or expect one.
The planning method that works
Walk the plan with your furniture layout. Not the empty floor plan, the one with the sofa and the bed drawn in. Stand in each room mentally and ask where you will plug things in.
Count appliances, then add two per room. You will not regret the spares. You will regret the shortfall every day.
Photograph the marked walls before plastering. When the electrician has marked the socket positions, walk around and photograph every wall with a tape measure in shot. This takes fifteen minutes and it is the record you will want when you hang a picture or install a shelf and need to know where the cable runs.
Check heights. Standard socket height is fine for most positions, but above a counter, behind a bed, or below a wall mounted TV all need specific heights. Say so at marking stage.
What it costs to get right versus get wrong
At first fix, an additional power point is a modest incremental cost, commonly S$80 to S$220 depending on whether concealment is involved.
After the fact, the same point requires either visible surface trunking, which most people dislike, or hacking a channel, laying conduit, patching, curing and repainting. That is multiple trades and multiple visits, and it commonly costs several times the first fix price for a result that matches less well. Ten extra points at first fix costs less than three added later, and you get all ten.
