Power point and data point installation

Adding power points is the single most common job we do, and it is also the one where the quoted price varies most between contractors, because "one power point" can describe very different amounts of work depending on where it goes and how it is wired.

What affects the price

A socket added along an existing surface trunking run is a straightforward extension. The same socket routed to a spot with no nearby trunking, or set into the wall itself, involves more cable, more mounting work, and in the case of concealed wiring, hacking and patching. Always confirm which one you are being quoted before comparing prices between contractors.

What it costs

Single 13A sockets start from $75, double sockets from $80, and CAT6 data points from $150. Power points with an indicator switch, for a hob or hood, start from $115. Concealed wiring costs more than surface, since it involves hacking, conduit and patching. HDB units default to surface wiring unless concealed is specifically requested.

Timing, if you are renovating

Power point positions are one of the easiest things to get wrong and one of the most expensive to fix afterwards. If you are mid-renovation, mark up your furniture layout first and walk it with your electrician before the walls close, not after.
