Flickering Lights, Dead Sockets, Burning Smells: What Is Urgent and What Can Wait

Why this question is hard to answer on your own
Electrical problems are unusual among household faults because the harmless ones and the dangerous ones often look identical from the outside. A flickering light might be a loose bulb. It might also be a loose connection quietly heating up inside a junction box in your ceiling.
This guide sorts the common signs into three groups: call today, book this week, and probably fine but worth mentioning. Nothing here needs any tools or any testing on your part. It is about knowing when to stop living with something.
Call today
These are the signs that mean a fault is active right now and has the potential to cause a fire or an injury.
A burning smell with no obvious source. Sometimes described as a fishy or acrid plastic smell. That smell is heated electrical insulation. It means something is arcing or running far hotter than it should. Switch off the affected circuit at the DB box if you can identify it, and get someone in. Do not wait to see if it goes away.
Scorch marks, browning or melted plastic around a socket, a switch, a plug top or inside the DB box. Discolouration is a record of heat that already happened. The condition that caused it has not repaired itself.
A socket, switch or plug that is hot to the touch. Warm is sometimes normal for a socket running a heavy appliance. Hot enough that you want to pull your hand away is not.
Any shock or tingle from an appliance body, a tap, a metal sink, a washing machine casing or a light fitting. Even a mild tingle means current is present where it should not be. In a wet environment like a bathroom or kitchen, the same fault that gives a tingle on a dry day can be lethal on a wet one.
Sparks or a bang from a socket or the DB box. A small spark as you unplug a heavy appliance is normal. A spark from a socket that nothing is being plugged into is not.
Buzzing, crackling or sizzling from a switch, socket or the DB box. Electricity is meant to be silent. Sound means arcing.
Any of the above combined with water. Ceiling seepage near a light fitting, a leak above your DB box, or a bathroom fault after a flood. Water plus electricity moves everything up a category.
If you have one of these, switch off the affected circuit and call. If you cannot identify which circuit, and the symptom is severe, switch off the main.
Book this week
These are real faults that should not be ignored, but they are not usually about to cause a fire tonight.
Power that trips repeatedly. Once is an event. Three times in a week is a fault. Something is wrong and it will not fix itself.
Lights flickering across more than one room. A single flickering bulb is usually a bulb or a driver. Flickering in several rooms at once suggests something upstream, such as a loose connection at the DB box or a neutral problem. That is worth attention.
Lights that dim noticeably when an appliance starts. A brief dip as the aircon compressor kicks in can be normal. A pronounced dim every time suggests the circuit is loaded near its limit or there is a poor connection somewhere.
A dead socket. No smell, no marks, just nothing. Usually a loose connection, a failed socket, or a break in the circuit. Not urgent, but a loose connection is exactly the thing that becomes a hot socket later.
A socket or switch that is loose in the wall, wobbles when you plug something in, or has a cracked faceplate. The mechanical problem is the visible part. The concern is the strain that movement puts on the connections behind it.
An RCCB you have never tested. There is a test button on it. If it has never been pressed, you do not actually know your main safety device works. An untested RCCB is not an emergency, but it is an unknown, and it should not be.
A DB box with old style rewireable fuses rather than modern breakers, or one with no RCCB at all. Common in older flats that have never been upgraded. This is a standards gap rather than an active fault, but it is a meaningful one.
Worth mentioning, probably fine
One bulb flickering or one light that has gone. Try a new bulb first. LED fittings also have drivers that fail, which looks similar to a bulb failure but needs the fitting replaced rather than the lamp.
A slight hum from a dimmer or an LED fitting. Often a compatibility issue between the dimmer and the LED driver rather than a fault. Annoying, not dangerous.
A trip that happened once during a thunderstorm and never recurred. Surges happen. If everything reset cleanly and nothing has repeated, note it and move on.
A socket that feels slightly warm with a heavy appliance plugged into it and running. Some warmth is expected. Track whether it is getting worse over time.
Aircon tripping only its own breaker. Usually an aircon issue rather than an electrical installation issue. Start with your aircon servicing company.
The trap: things that get quietly worse
Most electrical fires in homes do not start suddenly. They start with a connection that was slightly loose from the day it was made, which heats a little every time load passes through it, which oxidises the metal, which makes the connection worse, which makes it hotter.
That process takes years and gives you warnings the entire time. The warnings are exactly the "book this week" items above: intermittent flickering, an occasionally warm socket, a socket that works sometimes.
This is why the honest answer to "can I live with this?" is usually yes, for now, and that is precisely the problem. You can live with a loose connection for two years. The two years are the risk, not the moment you noticed it.
What to check before you call
None of this requires opening anything up. Note which circuits are affected. One room or the whole flat. Note when it happens. Only when a specific appliance runs, only in the evening, only when it rains, or at random. Note when it started, and whether anything changed around that time. Photograph your DB box with the cover open, so the labelling and the breaker layout are visible. Those four things typically cut the diagnostic time in half.
Older flats deserve a look even without symptoms
If your flat is more than twenty five years old and has never had electrical work done, it is worth having the installation checked even if nothing is currently wrong. Wiring insulation degrades with heat and age. Earthing arrangements in older blocks were built to older standards. Loads in the average home have roughly doubled in a generation while the wiring behind the walls stayed the same. None of that means anything is wrong with your flat. It means it is worth knowing.
